great potentials: So far yet so near By Gina Prohhorov great potentials
During Holy Thursdays, we see families and individuals going around the churches doing the stations of the cross. In short, it’s the way to reflect on mankind’s mistakes.
We think of what happened long ago when Jesus was right here. We remember those people who never believed Him. Even those who worked with Him , still finally, turned against Him at the last minute.
We pray and we look up to the sky, thinking somewhere , somehow God can hear us. We wish He can give us time for a second, just to grant our requests.
Yes, so far. But so near, perhaps, even just beside us is a man who has been wanting to be our friend. Perhaps someone out there has been wishing that we can give him more time. Yet we always look so far.
We go to church promising God we will do better but when we reach our neighborhood, we talk against another person.
Even when the priest would say , “Peace be with you” , you turn only to your chosen friends. Never do you try to approach someone you have a misunderstanding with.
So where is the peace?
We pray so hard, even saying novenas but we cannot treat our own family members well. Is it too much familiarity that breeds contempt?
How many neighbors are not even in good terms? How many couples cannot even sleep in the same bedroom anymore? How many can say sorry to God but never to the person he has hurt?
Oooooops, maybe that is me!? Oh, I never say sorry but that only happens between me and my husband. But my husband’s love is one of the rarest kinds of love…one of the rarest gifts on earth.
Still we have to try our best. Do not look so far when you have not turned to your right and to your left. Do not look so far when you have not stared at the person just right in front of your nose.
It is still different when we have peace of mind, when we can be comfortable most of the time. Try. Just try. You definitely have a lot of excuses and justifications about the other person. He may even be the worst human being on earth yet, it is your role to make him be a better person. Right? Maybe, not? You will make a difference in this world if you make him a bit different than before.
So try, let us have a positive, constructive Holy Thursday, applicable right where it is near before going far.
