Mel Tiangco and Joey de Leon of GMA7 recently taped their Partners Mel & Joey Cebu Summer Special in front of one of Cebu’s landmarks, the Magellan’s Cross.
Partners Mel & Joey is an hour-long Sunday talk show that tackles different stories and discussions.
“We talk about anything under the sun. There’s fun and there’s also the serious side on life issues. We want our stories to give lessons to others,” Joey said on their topics not only of success but also of failure.
On their Cebu Summer Special episode to be aired on March 27, the partners feature Cebu’s best – from the famous otap to danggit, to the Sinulog Festival, and Colon st., said to be the country’s oldest street.
Mel and Joey both find Cebu as the place to be. “Cebu is even more complete than Manila,” Joey said.
While Mel, on her second time in Cebu, said she couldn’t get enough. “There’s so much to see! I would like to come back here and stay longer. Maybe a month! Haha!” she beamed.
Up close with the laughing man
Joey is a veteran comedian and one of the hosts of a noontime show. As expected, Mel and Joey make an interesting duo with their distinctive personalities.
Who is Joey in real life? “What you see is what you get. I am the same person as you see on TV,” Joey answered. The comedian needs no other form of relaxation because for him, anything you do and love doing is already a form of relaxation. “I also travel, and sometimes paint,” he said.
For the Partners Mel & Joey tandem, Joey enthused, “With Mel? It’s an honor for me to be paired with her for a show…she’s a pillar in the industry.”
Wonder woman
Mel is one of GMA 7’s top news anchors, TV drama host and vice president of GMA Kapuso Foundation which gives services to many of the less privileged in our country.
With a day packed with meetings, shows, tapings, and other functions, how does Mel find time for herself?
“I’m being with myself already. What I am doing is my life,” was her answer. A massage, a long bath, good time with her children, and an uninterrupted sleep are some of the things that cool her down and make her day.
Mel talks of her children as her greatest contribution to society “because I brought them up with values and character. They were raised to be good and not do anything to harm anybody,” she said.
For aspiring print and broadcast journalists, Mel said, “Be interested in what you do. Know what is happening around you and acquire general information. But most of all, go for the real thing, and not for glamour.”
For Mel, real thing means real-life stories and issues that affect an individual, a community, or a country as a whole.
