Sounds and Images: A time to ‘revisit’ old movies By Roger Serna Sounds and Images
After more than a year, I guess it’s about time we ransack our VCD/DVD collection of movies that can provide us with the much-needed spiritual enlightenment at this time of the year.
On top of my list (though it was glaringly snubbed and ignored in the recent Oscar Awards) is still Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. The award-winning director-actor has released a tamer version of the movie this year. Tamer in the sense that some bloody scenes were shortened and some even cut out.
My copy, however, is the original version. Although it transported me to a mild state of depression (!) the first time I saw it, I still prefer it over the tamer version for the much needed shock-value that can very well help us attain the enlightenment we have been longing for.
Also in the list of must-see films are recent releases, like The Gospel of John and Birhen ng Manaoag. You can also include Constantine with Keannu Reeves in the title role. The movie can also help strengthen your faith, if you feel it has been wavering lately.
Other titles are Moses, The Ten Commandments, Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus and Jesus Christ Superstar, among others. If they’re not in you’re collection, a dash to the nearest video shop is the next best option.
Hurry, before they run out of copies. If that fate befalls you, you can still have the ever-reliable inspirational songs and tunes to provide for the background in your soul-searching and meditation. Of course, there are publications that might have gathered so much dust already due to neglect or to being forgotten for quite some time.
It’s time to revisit these things. All you need is your imagination to make the most out of the remaining days and hours of the Holy Week.

Tonight at the Cebu City Sports Center, the first part of the Buhing Kalbaryo 2005 will take center stage as young thespians from Barangay Guadalupe, with a sprinkling from the Zugbo Drama Circle of Southwestern University, will give their best shot in portraying various roles in the Passion play that depicts the sufferings of Jesus Christ.
Award-winning playwright-director Al Evangelio and the assistance of talented visual artists have conceptualized a set design that well help us visualize the locations of the events that figured in the Redeemer’s last hours on earth.
The play starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be restaged in the same venue tomorrow, Good Friday, at 11 a.m., segue to the Via Crucis along V. Rama ave., up to the Guadalupe Church grounds for the crucifixion, the seven last words and the death scenes.

For those who have the luxury of time, budget and everything, the Holy Week activities in Bantayan and the neighboring towns of Sta. Fe and Madridejos are always beckoning especially to those who have not yet experienced spending the Holy Week there.
For those who have already been there and have enjoyed every minute of their stay, there’s much more reason to come back and bring along props and paraphernalia to make subsequent visits even more enjoyable and memorable.
In my case, I have been there repeatedly for the past few years already and so, off to another destination I will go for a change. I could have opted to go to the of town Naga, upon the invitation of upcoming stage director Noly Omani, had the invite come earlier - before I made preparations for a mountain trek in my beloved hometown of Oslob. Anyway, there’s still next year, Nol.

Minglanilla, which has been noted for its elaborate dramatization of the jubilant meeting of the risen Christ and His Mother Mary, after the former rose from the dead, has decided to make the famous Sugat rites into a full-blown festival called the Kabanhawan.
Various religious and socio-cultural events have been added to the traditional Sugat that add up to a whole day affair. Again, if you have the luxury of time, budget and everything else, you know where to head for the culmination of the Holy Week celebration.
If you meet a familiar face there, it could be somebody else’s. Ha-ha! A blessed observation of the Holy Week!
