Commentary: Highest light
By Rene Lizada
Commentary

IT IS Holy Week. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday. The use of palms for a procession is first mentioned in writings of a Spanish nun named Etheria.

Holy Monday is attributed to the time when Jesus got mad at the moneylenders in the temple. On that day He also preached and healed the sick.

The day after Holy Monday is clearly Holy Tuesday, the time when the Pharisees plotted to trap Jesus into saying blasphemous statements. That day, Jesus talked to His disciples on the Mount of Olives and told them about the destruction of Jerusalem and the signs of the last day.

Holy Wednesday is also known as "Spy Wednesday," the day when Judas betrayed Jesus by showing the Pharisees were He could be found.

Maundy Thursday is associated with three events: last supper, agony in the garden and Christ's arrest.

On Good Friday, Christ carried His cross and died in it, nailed to a bloody end.

Holy Saturday brings to a close the Holy Week and the forty days of Lent.

Easter Sunday is course proof that our Lord was no lunatic. He did rise from the dead.

All of us have some cross to carry. We all have something that we must overcome. And it can be anything. Power, lust, arrogance, pride, materialism, a cruel tongue, vanity, impatience.

All of us have a mountain to climb. And we may find ourselves asking "My God, My God why have you forsaken me?" We may thirst and be lost and hopeless but we must go on till we say, it is finished.

Perhaps one of the reasons we are alive is for us to be able to seek our higher self. In order to do that we have to face our greatest enemy: ourselves. In Gethsemane, Christ confronted His worst nightmares. He saw it coming and yet He took the full force and in so doing redeemed not only Himself but also the whole of humanity.

Christ asks the same of us. We must carry our cross knowing that behind us, ahead of us, beside us is the One who first carried His. We must seek our light, our highest light.

Then Easter will come. Know that it will.
