Cepca March event on Saturday

CEPCA’S weekend warriors battle for a spot in the grand finals in Saturday’s March edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association Monthly Tournament.

Leading the expected participants in the one-day affair at the Stella Maris Seafarer Center in Pier 4 is JongJong Melendez, the chess-playing lawyer who topped last month’s Cepca Special Invitational Tournament also at Stella Maris.

The tournament will start at 1 p.m. and will be for five rounds.

“We don’t have any other date to hold the March tournament since most of the dates have been booked by other chess events,” said Cepca president Jun Olis, explaining why the games will have to be held on a Black Saturday.

Also expected this Saturday are former Cepca presidents and brothers Danny and Boy Pestaño, Rene Casia, Mandy Baria, Mer Fernandez and Vic Sepulveda, who have all figured well in the previous monthly events.

Lady chess player Therese Gonzales is again one of the guest participants of the event, who will be giving the Cepcans a run for their money. Gonzales, topped the February edition of the competition, though it was first runner-up Jerry Rallos who earned the right to play in the annual grand finals as Gonzales is not a regular Cepca member.

Dante Arguelles won the year-opening January tournament to earn the first ticket to the grand finals to be held in December. (GCM)
