Crunch Chicken, Purcia Transport end elims with wins

CRUNCH Chicken passed the first round of eliminations with flying colors keeping it steady in crunchtime to win, 76-73, in overtime against the Imarlex quintet in the Jaycees Basketball Association 2nd Conference at the City Sports Club-Cebu.

Crunch Chicken finished the first half of the eliminations with 2-1 win-loss slate to stay at No.2 behind five-time champion Purcia Transport, which finished the first phase with an unscathed 3-0 record after thrashing defending champion CPI Gas, 114-64, in one of the most lopsided games in the tournament’s six-year history.

Tied game

The game was tied at 65-all in regulation.

In overtime, Imarflex had the chance to win the game but team owner Francis Ngchee bungled an undergoal stab that could have given the team its first victory.

Both squads exchanged baskets and Crunch Chicken had a 74-73 lead with 10 seconds left. Ngchee was left wide open at the baseline for a free attempt but failed to connect, as Crunch Chicken grabbed the rebound and went on to ice the game from the line.

Jimbo Noel topped Crunch Chicken with 29 points, while team owner Benedict Chua added 19. Niño Boniel and John Garcia scored 27 points each for Imarflex.

In the other game, Purcia Transport scored a vengeful 50-point victory over the team that denied it its sixth straight title last year.

However, Purcia has no reason to celebrate as it beat a five-man CPI Gas.

Crunch Chicken (76) – Noel 29, Chua 19, Yu 12, Hermano 10, Dalocanog 4, Tolentino 2. Imarflex (73) – Boniel 27, Garcia 27, Ngchee 10, Porras 6, Chaowee 3.

Purcia Transport (114) – Sta. Maria 39, Jayme 25, Odulio 15, Te 14, Seno 14, Lim 8. CPI Gas (64) – So 28, Co 14, de Jesus 7, Ong 7, Huan 2. (RCM)
