Leading Women Educators in the 20th Century
By Jenara Regis Newman

In connection with the Women’s Month, March, Cebu Normal University (CNU) had a photo exhibit of Cebuana leaders in the field of education. The idea of the exhibit came from Museum Council head, Dr. Marcelo Lopez, who mobilized faculty members and museum staff, with the approval of CNU university president, Dr. Ester B. Velasquez.

The exhibit includes the following women educators:

Founders or co-founders: Doña Anunciacion Barcenilla Aznar, Mrs. Gadalupe Canton, Ms. Marie Ernestin Fajatin, Doña Josefina Rivera Gullas, Mrs. Guadalupe Latonio, Dr. Agnes Almendras Magpale, Dr. Concepcion R. Manto, Dr. Montana M. Phua, Sor Dorotea Rubio, Dr. Lourdes Librs Rosaroso, Mrs. Zenaida F. Salazar, Mrs. Epifania Velez and Ms. Lydia Ibañez.

Board chair/presidents and vice-presidents: Dr. Lydia Aznar Alfonso, Dr. Araceli G. Almase, Dr. Concesa M. Baduel, Dr. Bibiana A. Conde, Sr. Trinidad Dosdos, Mrs. Gloria Escaño, Ms. Candice Gotianuy, Dr. Lourdes D. Jereza, Sr. Clarisse Juario, Dr. Heidi Limosnero, Dr. Fe L. Lumagpas, Dr. Francis Lumain, Dr. Aurora Miñoza, Dr. Fe S. Necesario, Atty. Felisa Oro, Dr. Tecla P. revilla, Dr. Lily K. Sabula, Sr. Merced Sanchez and Ms. Josefa O. Yap.

National and regional officials, Dept. of Education: Dr. Susana B. Cabahug, Dr. Julita V. Ortiz, Ms. Carolina Pañares, and Dr. Lourdes R. Quisumbing.
Superintendents and assistant superintendents, Department of Education: Dr. Dolores P. Abellanosa, Dr. Fe V. Bono, Dr. Nerissa T. Calub, Dr. Eugenia M. Chiong, Mrs. Augusta L. Dimataga, Dr. Sinfrosa A. Guinares, Dr. Veneranda Olis, Mrs. Remigia R. Ouano, Dr. Elsa T. Suralta and Mrs. Amanda Trinidad.

Pioneers: Mrs. Conception Alba Rodriguez (principal of the first English language primary school in Cebu City), Dr. Lourse F. Suico, (1st teacher, public school kindergarten Cebu Normal School), and Mrs. Primitiva Violanda (1st female elementary school principal in Cebu City).

Special fields in education: Mrs. Gliceria Y. Alinsonoin, Mrs. Ramona Cabrera, Mrs. Elena Diola, Ms. Luz Isobal, Dr. Concepcion Martires, Mrs. Yolanda Oporto, Mrs. Allen Pages, Dr. Josefina Poblete, Ms. Ingrid Sala Santamaria, Ms. Luz Mancao Sandiego and Ms. Visitacion Villamor.

Cebuana by adoption/affinity: Dr. Tecla Espiritu, Dr. Alicia Cabatingan, Ms. Rosalina Kintanar, Mrs. Dee Magdadaro, Dr. Gloria Pinili, Ms. Pilar Blanco Sala, Dr. Nelia Cruz Sarcol, Dr. Alicia Tan and Dr. Ester B. Velasquez.

The exhibit is not complete as the research on these women educators who have helped shape the minds and morals of Cebu’s youth of the past century is still ongoing. Documentation on these women and their crucial role in the field of education has been non-existent. CNU’s current research on them hopes to rectify this neglect.
