Team Cebu City members go on tennis marathon
IT WILL be non-stop tennis for members of Team Cebu City.
AS they prepare for the Arafura Games this May, James Karl Cañete, John Francis Largo and siblings Bernardine “Niño” and Sally Mae Siso, will be busy in the coming days as they take part in two major tournaments in Manila and a region-wide meet in Cebu.
The team will compete in the Tru Flex Tennis Tournament, which starts tomorrow, and the Toby’s Tennis Championship 2005 on April 12-17, both at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Largo and Cañete, who dished out remarkable performances beating taller players from Germany in last year’s International Children’s Games, will compete in the Boys 16-Under and 18-Under; Niño will compete in the Boys 12-Under and 14-Under, and Sally Mae in the Girls 12-Under and 14-Under.

Niño is the country’s Boys 12-Under No.1 player, while Sally Mae is top-ranked in the Girls 12-Under.
The players will be accompanied by coaches Dino Siso and Fritz Tabura.
After the Manila campaign, the TCC-Tennis members will return to Cebu to compete in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet, which starts on April 18 in Dumanjug, Cebu.
Largo and Cañete have been rigidly preparing for these tournaments for the past two months, while the Sisos spent three days training in Ozamis City during the Holy Week.
The Siso siblings’ proud father, Dino, is confident that Niño and Sallymae will win the two tournaments, particularly his daughter, who has gained a lot of confidence since winning in Malaysia.
“It was a huge boost for Sally Mae. But I always tell her not to relax and give her best in every competition. We hope to get this one,” Dino said.
Cebu City Sports Commission chairman Jonathan Guardo said that these tournaments will definitely play a huge factor, especially for Largo and Cañete, who are bound for the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia.
“I think our chances are good. Tennis has always been a medal-earner for us. And with Largo, Cañete and the Sisos, TCC is in for another victory. We at the Sports Commission may have been working on a very tight budget lately, but tennis will always be a priority to us. We just hope that our athletes will be at the top of their health,” said Guardo. (JSV)
