Tragedy in Davao By Mike T. Limpag Sun.Star Correspondent
TRAGEDY struck the chess-playing Retanal family after losing one of their youngest members last Thursday in Davao City.
“Kalit ka-ayo, na shock gyud ko (It happened so fast, I was so shocked),” National Master Elwin Retanal said in an interview yesterday.
According to Retanal, his son King was not feeling well Wednesday dawn and was also ill Thursday, refusing to be fed and instead only had water during the trip to Davao, where Retanal would play in the Mindanao leg of the Filway Active Chess Tournament.
When they arrived in Davao, they went to a medical clinic and King was hooked up to an oxygen tank before they were allegedly shooed away by a nurse.
“Bastos ka-ayo, gipagawas dayun mi. Unya igo ra ming nakatalikud, gi-ingnan mi nga di na matabang ang akong anak,” said Retanal, the 1997 National Juniors champion, who went on to represent the country in the Asian Junior Championships. (They were so rude. We were led out and then they told us that my son wouldn’t make it.)
Despite the tragedy, Retanal said he will play in the Filway tournament in honor of his son, who would have turned one-year-old on Arpil 24.
“I will dedicate this tournament to my son,” said Retanal, whose older brother, William Jr., was a former Cebu Chess King champion. “There is nothing I can do about it, he is now with God.
Retanal also said that he will stay in Davao until next month.
“After this, I will not play for a while,” he said, adding that he will forgo the Cebu leg of the Filway Active Open on April 23-24.
Though he has accepted his son’s fate, Retanal won’t let the medical clinic go easy as he plans to file a lawsuit.
“I want to hear the side of the doctor why it happened,” he said.
Retanal also plans to ask the help of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in his case.
