Unknown stuns GM Antonio
Unheralded Perkins Bayron shocked Grandmaster Joey Antonio in the first round of the Filway/Timelife Chess Championship Mindanao leg yesterday at the Entertainment Area of SM City-Davao in Davao City.
Bayron’s disposal of the tournament top seed overshadowed the victories posted by the country’s top two players, GM Eugene Torre and International Master Mark Paragua.
The seeding was based on the local ratings of the players in rapid chess.
Torre crushed Relix Borbon, while Paragua took the measure of Charlie Magne Boter to lead the winning march of the favorites.
The other big guns to score a full point in the opening round were Cebuano IM Barlo Nadera, IM Idelfonso Datu, Fide Master Oliver Dimakiling, National Masters Rolando Nolte and Alexander Lupian, and US Master Pedro Tidoy.
The fourth-seeded Datu beat Reginald Braceros, Nadera downed Noli Cabilas, Dimakiling outplayed Rodrigo Catayas, Nolte defeated Mario Caguida, Jr., Lupian trounced Teofisto Camasin, and Tidoy whipped Bernabe Cataluna.
Other games werestill in progress at press time yesterday.
The event supported by Filway Marketing CEO/President Hector Tagaysay offers P30,000 to the champion in the Open division.
In the distaff side, which dangles P10,000 to the champion, Mallorca Olympiad veteran Loreshyl Cuizon took the scalp of Lovely Engay to a share of the early lead with local bet Mary Angeli Dimakiling, winner over Jerrylyn Danao.
