RP keglers bag gold, 2 silvers By Karla I. Paner(br>Sun.Star Correspondent
THE Philippines finally earned its first gold medal – and some silvers to boot – in the Asian Schools Bowling Championship.
Mark Ho led a strong performance by the Filipino delegates in Thursday’s events after the Manila bowler delivered the gold medal in All Events of the eighth edition of the annual championships at the Jaya Ancol Bowling Center in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The RP contingent plucked two more silvers medals in a productive day courtesy of the RP Team A in its Doubles squad.
Team Event
Ho totaled a combined 3,885 pinfalls from the Singles, Doubles and Team Event to claim the gold, while silver medalist Hsing–Chao Cheng of Chinese Taipei had 3,870 and Singapore’s Somjed K totaled 3,870 for the bronze medal.
In the Team Event, the quartet of Ho, Jeff Chan, Ian Dychangco and Cebuano kegler Jomar Jumapao led the first block last Wednesday but Thailand banked on the winning momentum of Supawat S and Somjed K, who earlier won the gold in the Doubles event, to overtake the RP boys and score a double victory.
Chan and Ho hacked out another silver in the Doubles behind the Thai tandem, while the All-Cebuano duo of Clarence Tiu and Sam Dychangco of Philippines B wound up seventh.
Meanwhile, Cebuana Kimberly Lao took the number one spot in the first block of the Girls Masters with 1,683 pinfalls, a decent 15-point lead over second-placer Wan Nur Attiqqa of Malaysia Team B.
Top spot
Lao, 14, the only Filipino to qualify in last year’s Masters, scored eight strikes and a spare in the eight-game series to take the top spot after entering the Masters event at 13th place.
Her Doubles partner Lara Posadas is at 12th at the end of the first block.
In the Boys Masters, top-finisher Ho had a sharp fall, the No.1 qualifier dropping to No.16 after the first block.
Jumapao, however, made up for his teammate’s poor performance as he rocketed to the third spot from 11th going in, averaging 226 pinfalls in eight games to keep the medal in sight.
Third overall
Jumapao swept five strikes to total 1,861 pinfalls, while his teammate Chan, who almost scored a perfect game in game five, is at sixth with 1,752. The other Pinoy qualifier in the Masers, Tiu, is at 15th place.
The Philippines is currently on third overall in the medal tally with Thailand and Singapore taking the first and second spots, respectively.
