National showdown of classic Volkswagen cars set

That’s what Volkswagen (VW) Club sa Sugbu said during the launching of its 1st National Classic Showdown Volkswagen Club set on April 22 to 23 at Mandaue City Sports Complex.

“It’s going to be a grand showcase of the best of VW ‘50s to ’70s classic models,” said Franz Josef Villalonga, president of the VW Club sa Sugbu. “We have tied up with the local government of Mandaue. They have included our showdown in the calendar of activities for the Mantawi Festival. The public is invited to come.”

“We have participants coming from Davao, Caga-yan de Oro, Manila, Iloilo, Bacolod and General Santos now (numbering) more than 20 entries,” said Joseph Clyde Kriekenbeek, past president of the club and chairman of the 1st National VW Classic Showdown.

Why Volkswagen? “Aside from its peculiar, classic look, VW is economical and efficient,” said Villalonga.

“One can buy an old VW car for as low as P30,000, and it is in running condition already. It’s up to the owner to restore its original look and put more accessories,” said Kriekenbeek.

The VW Club claims to be the biggest car club in the city, gathering enthusiasts of Volkswagen classic and vintage models like the Beetle, Buggy, Fastback, Kombi, Tradback and Variant.

Every year, members bring VW accessories, tools and reusable spare parts to exchange and sell among fellow members at the Swap Meet.

Kriekenbeek also said the club gathers at least once a quarter to drive their VW cars during the Bug Run. “We’ve been to Mt. Manung-gal twice already, and it was quite a sight with more than 60 VW cars driving up the mountain, ” he said.

The club was formed in 1998 and now has around 100 members. ALC
