Overseas Pinoys to boost RP educational facilities

DELEGATES of the 3rd Global Filipino Networking Convention have pledged to help improve the country’s educational system after recognizing that it is in a serious crisis.

A resolution furnished Sun.Star recognized that the Philippines has a critical need for books, computers, educational software and other educational material resources to facilitate the effective delivery of education to Filipino students.

It said the lack of these educational resources seriously “hampers the ability of Filipino students to achieve educationally.”

The delegates promised to initiate efforts to gather books and educational resources in their respective neighborhoods, churches, schools or cities, states or countries to be shipped to designated schools or non-government organizations (NGO) involved in education in the Philippines.

The delegates to the convention held earlier this year in Cebu represented overseas Filipinos living in Australia, Canada, Germany, Guam, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The delegates also pledged to actively support the efforts of NGOs like the Books for Barrios in the US, which has gathered, bundled and shipped over eight million books to the Philippines, aside from establishing over 49 Models of Excellence schools in the country.

The delegates will also encourage educational institutions all over the world to enter into collaborative agreements with Philippine educational institutions to transfer and exchange technological knowledge, training and material resources; and to provide scholarships to Philippine students and faculty to study abroad.

“For the Philippines to compete in the global market, the Philippine educational system must be significantly upgraded so that Filipino students can be provided with the education they need to make the Philippines and Filipinos competitive in the global economy,” the resolution said. JBN
