AFTER running away with two bags they allegedly robbed from a couple out on a date, two men fell into the hands of authorities after their getaway vehicle fell into a ditch.

Jason Tauto-an, 19, and Antonio Dayanan Dimpas, 28, were arrested after the couple passed by and saw them carrying one of the stolen bags past 10 p.m. last Friday.

According to Liloan traffic investigator PO1 Necavero Balberde, Regin Arsenal Capangpangan, 25, and his girlfriend Theresa Joy Pilapil, 24, were about to board a motorcycle to go home after a date at the beach in Barangay Jubay, Liloan.

Just then, two men approached them and poked a handgun at the two of them, announcing a holdup.

They took Capangpangan’s backpack containing clothes, several identification cards, a cell phone and P3,000 cash.

They also grabbed Pilapil’s shoulder bag that had two cell phones, P2,600 cash, identification cards and a notebook.

The suspects boarded a motorcycle driven by a third accomplice who was waiting.

The three quickly sped off heading south.

As they were fleeing, their motorcycle crashed into an oncoming motorcycle, prompting them to swerve to avoid getting hit.

“Nadasmagan man gyud nila ang laing motor unya naligid sila sa kanal (they hit the other motorcycle and then they fell into the canal),” Balberde narrated.

SPO4 Florencio Apua-do and some barangay tanods were first to respond to the accident.

Just as a crowd was beginning to gather around the fallen passengers, Capangpangan and Pilapil passed by and stopped to see what was going on.

Just then, Capangpangan recognized his black backpack in Dimpas’ possession.

The couple quickly alerted the police and the two were arrested.

The suspects identified their third companion, Leonardo Patena, as the one who fled with Pilapil’s bag.

A team led by Police Station Chief Milo Dagasdas tried to track him down and recover Pilapil’s belongings, but they came back empty-handed.
