Mayor takes back job offer to 2 tanods

BECAUSE Kamagayan Barangay Captain Celestino Avila “tolerated” video carrera operations in his turf, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña will take back his promise to provide jobs to two tanods injured while responding to an alarm last month.

The mayor was angry after the police confiscated at least 18 video carrera machines in Kamagayan last week.

“Kamagayan is where the barangay captain is tolerant of video carrera, which are just around his house,” he said in a press conference.

Because of that, he will no longer provide jobs at City Hall to tanods Gerardo Pasquite, 43, and Tomas Aganda, 36.

He did not say, however, if he will also not release the P10,000 cash assistance each he earlier promised to give Pasquite and Aganda.

Pasquite was wounded in his right foot while Aganda was injured in the left leg when responding to an armed person alarm.

Although both men were unarmed, they tried to take into custody a soldier who allegedly brandished his pistol, resisted arrest and shot them.

Avila, in a telephone interview, denied he tolerated the illegal betting game, saying he had been warning his constituents against it.

“Mga gahi lang gyud sila’g ulo. Gahi gyud kaayo. Kami ra ba gyung mga opisyal ang mabuthan (They’re very stubborn. It is us officials who end up getting scolded),” he said.

He said they had been vigilant but his tanods cannot guard the barangay all the time.

He said the two tanods would be better off if Osmeña would reconsider. He welcomed Osmeña’s announcement the provincial police will be allowed to operate in Cebu City, exerting more pressure on operators. RHM
