OFW on trial for ‘failing to support kids’

AN OVERSEAS seaman was charged in court for child abuse for allegedly failing to support, for about six months, his three minor children who live with their mother in Cebu City.

The Office of the Cebu City Prosecutors, in filing the case against Hilario Aranaydo, found that the respondent failed to disprove his wife’s allegation that he did not send financial support to his three children while he was working aboard a foreign vessel.

Aranaydo’s wife, Filomena, said that while the respondent worked overseas for 10 months, from September 2000 to June 2001, he only gave support for four months, when he sent P7,000 for each child.

The accused, she said, was earning US$2,526 a month as the ship’s chief mate.

She said her husband’s failure to give financial support has prejudiced the welfare of the children. She added that her husband left them and lived with another woman.

But Hilario, in his defense, said he has been giving financial aid to his children and that his wife is only after his money.

He said, though, that on those times that he failed to give any financial support to his children, he did not have work. He added that he only had money when he had overseas work.

He said he left two boutiques to his wife in order to support the needs of the children, as he does not have a stable job.

But in his resolution, Assistant City Prosecutor Rodulph Joseph Val J. Carrillo said Hilario failed to refute the documentary evidence presented by Filomena, that he only gave support to his children for four of the 10 months that he worked as a ship’s chief mate. GN
