Paref gets to soccer finals amid controversy
By MIKE T. LIMPAG

ILOILO City – It was exposure and experience the Paref Springdale football players wanted.

They got both – in and outside the pitch – as Paref Springdale salvaged three podium finishes in a controversy-marred final day of the Philippine Football Fiesta at the Barotac Nuevo Town Plaza field yesterday.

After getting a neat football lesson from the Barotac boys in a 2-0 loss in the 10-Under semifinals, the Paref boys got the finals seat against Southridge after it was found out that some of the Barotac boys were ineligible.

“They really are good, even if they played barefoot,” one Paref parent said.

In the finals, Javier Gallego ran out of steam and failed to score, while Iggy Maximo’s fancy moves failed to hit the mark as Springdale struggled early. Andoni Ugarte tried a long shot that flirted towards the goal before swerving out, while keeper Joey Uy pulled two saves to preserve the scoreless draw.

Just as things were headed to a shootout, Paolo Gonzales one timed a pass from his keeper towards the top post for Southridge’s win.

On the other hand, Paref’s 8-Under semifinal against Barotac Nuevo FC started late after the eligibility of the players was first verified by the organizers.

The prolific Aldrich Michael Pelenio scored one for Paref early but a late error in the dying minutes allowed BNFC to equalize and send the match to a shootout.

All four Paref kickers failed to hit their mark, while BNFC converted twice to barge into the finals, sending Paref to a third-place match with New Lucena, which they won.

After a controversial loss in the semifinals to St. Paul, Paref’s U-15 got past Calinog, 1-0, in a physical match courtesy of Miguel Arriola.

In the semis, the referee allegedly failed to call a goal that was brushed by the goalkeeper. Goals have been hard to call in the U-15 since the goals don’t have nets.
