Lapu City ignores folk’s opposition
DESPITE objections of barangay officials and residents, the Lapu-Lapu City Government will push through with the socialized housing project in Sitio Sudtunggan, Barangay Basak to accommodate the families who will be displaced by infrastructure projects in Barangay Gun-ob.
Councilor Mario Amores said the City Government has already allocated P14 million for the purchase of a 1.2-hectare relocation site in Sitio Sudtunggan.
Amores, also action officer of the local housing board, said the City Government will purchase the lot and develop the site.
It will also assist the beneficiaries in rebuilding their homes in Sitio Sudtunggan.
The beneficiaries will pay the City Government for the cost of the lot, at a socialized rate and under a long-term amortization plan, Amores said.
Scheme
Councilor Alley Berdin is still preparing the draft for the project’s repayment scheme.
Over 200 families will be displaced by the City Government’s plan to put up a megadome, fire station, and public market on a 5.5-hectare lot in Sitio Humay-Humay, Barangay Gun-ob.
Last Wednesday, the City Council authorized Mayor Arturo Radaza to enter into a P385-million contract with Young Builder’s Corporation for the drainage system in Barangay Gun-ob and Pajo, as well as the three-level dome and fire station projects in Barangay Gun-ob.
Authorization
In a letter, City Administrator Teodulo Ybañez, who is also chairman of the City’s bids and awards committee, asked the City Council to authorize the mayor to sign the contract with Young Builder’s Corp., the winning bidder.
It would appear from his letter, though, that the contract does not yet include the construction of the public market.
Amores said the contractor can start implementing the project only in areas that are vacant, so the demolition of houses in Barangay Gun-ob does not have to be done immediately.
The Basak Barangay Council passed a resolution last year “denying or banning” the proposed plan to relocate the squatters of Ahosan, Barangay Gun-ob to Sitio Sudtunggan, Barangay Basak.
Over 350 residents have also signed a petition expressing their opposition to the City’s project.
Even then, Amores said, the housing project will push through, saying the City has the authority to issue the project’s social acceptability. (ROV)
