Jets log upset, capture NBC crown

MAN FOR man the Jets are inferior to the RP-Cebuana Lhuillier.

But the expansion team had the wits to match the size and skills of the Nationals, which the Jets utilized to the fullest to score a 63-56 victory in the one-game championship match of the Spring Cooking Oil-NBC Pre-season tournament at the Rizal Coliseum.

The game was very physical, which resulted to the ejection of Jets center Randy Lopez and RP’s forward Mel Latoreno. The Nationals also lost coach Boycie Zamar in the early part of the second half after receiving a third bench technical foul.

Not enough

Without their chief tactician, the combined efforts of Bojing Acot, Paul Advincula, Bai Cristobal, Aboy Castro and Jerry Codiñera were not enough to lift the Nationals out of trouble.

The sweet-shooting Nationals only connected on 1-of-8 attempts from the 3-point arc in the final quarter as the Jets avenged their 88-114 loss to the Nationals during the elimination round.

It was only the first defeat of the RP-Cebuana Lhuillier in the weeklong competition, but it was also in the game that mattered most.

For third

In the curtain-raiser, the Far Eastern Insurance-backed Cavite made it two in a row against the defending NBC Northern conference champion Forward Taguig following a thrilling 77-74 win to claim third place.

Marquez was joined by Taguig’s Ricky Ricafuente, RP’s Niño Canaleta and Don Villamin and Cavite Insurers slotman McDonald Santos in the Mythical Five.
