Popeye crashes on way to victory

A JUBILATION jump that resulted into bad crash somehow smeared an otherwise awesome performance by the daredevil Popeye Rubi last Sunday.

The 23-year-old Rubi, took home two prestigious titles – the Expert 125 and Expert Open crowns – in the 2nd Leg of the 2005 Cebu Boardwalk National Motocross Series last Sunday, but also walked away with some injuries after suffering a bad fall at the end of his last run at the FF Cruz Compound competition site, North Reclamation Area, Mandaue City.

Open-class accident

Rubi, the country’s reigning Rider of the Year, easily won the Expert 125 crown, outdueling marquee riders Jovie Saulog and Weng Yapparcon, who finished second and third respectively in the event.

Rubi then made another scintillating run in the Expert Open class when the catastrophic episode
took place.

Celebrating his impressive feat, Rubi made a jaw-dropping jump but crashed badly upon landing. His chin hitting the handlebar, Rubi bounced off from his bike, suffering a concussion in the process.

Donark Yuson, who was behind Rubi, clinched runner-up honors, while Jing Leongson finished third.

Jovanni Abellar won the Intermediate class, while his brother Joshua topped the 4-stroke Open against the exciting Jimboy Pineda.

Jimboy Marcelo ruled the Novice class over Joel “Ambo” Yapparcon and Dexter Bacabac.

Bacabac, however, topped the Executives division after besting Andot Rubi.

The Peewee title ended up in the hands of Rafael Enriquez, while Renan Alquisola pulled off a second-place finish.

Unheralded Gerrol Robles bested Rap-Rap Dayao for the Mini top post as PSR’s Jon-Jon Adlawan finished third. (GCM)
