Wanted: Bedspace

Lie down, look up, see art. Kara Mae Muga Noveda finds how art inspiration rains down from the ceiling.

The young artist, on his first solo exhibit tells us he got his inspiration while lying down in his bed, contemplating on a mythical diploma.

A native of Mindanao, a UP Cebu graduating Fine Arts student finds himself seeking refuge in the small bed space that has become his home and soon the muse of his unique artistic brainchild.

The result of his dreamy-brainstorm of sorts is Elmer V. Canoy’s 19-piece installation and paintings collectively and suitably named, “Bedspacer.” In the economy of self-imposed small space, the artist intends to deliver his real-life experience. Wittingly or otherwise, he has likewise rendered pieces of tribute to the prevalent icons of pop culture: from the red Nokia 5110 to the black pair of Chuck Taylors.

“In my five years of studying art, I really had no direction—graduation became a great motivation to come up with something, years of living in small spaces finally led me to this form,” bares its shy creator, better known as Elmo (the emotional) in his circle of peers.

The form is not surprising and fundamentally the stereotyped artist’s room; complete and on cue with the messy sheets, sneakers and other stuff in disarray. It even features the artist’s own double deck bed with foam. The variably sized paintings are drawn with sketchy, bold strokes and resembling a “caricature” or comical character about it; in shades of strong colors to boot.

His professor, thesis panelist and influence, Raymund Fernandez has called Elmo’s work as an evolved, new form of realism.

While older artists have depicted the real conditions, Elmo hopes to achieve the same effect with a modern eye, practical humor and more interaction with the audience. He recognizes the past achievements of the likes of Brenda Fajardo, Imelda Endaya, Elmer Borlongan and Santi Bose in their search for the true Filipino expression.

At the burgeoning of technology-enhanced art pieces, (old and new schooled) Elmo is inviting everyone and anybody to walk in in exhibits and appreciate and support local art. He remains optimistic with his learned classical media.

Enterprisingly, he is also looking at alternative ways of presenting his works— this time, the guerilla way.

From the UP Cebu’s Little Gallery, his “Bedspacer” will move and stay at the Turtle’s Nest (along Gorordo Avenue, Lahug). Elmo will be sleeping on banig for awhile as he welcomes offers and negotiations for a possible school tour.
