Cebu City jocks stay ahead of pack By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Correspondent
DUMANJUG– Day 2 of the 2005 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) ended on a familiar note.
Cebu City, looking for its 11th straight overall crown, ended up on top the 12-contingent field, but didn’t look as dominating as before.
Entering the eve of Day 1, Cebu City leads the pack overall with three golds, four silvers, and two bronzes, but is expected to amass a truckload of hardware when the medal-rich swimming events get underway tomorrow, and in the taekwondo medal rounds, which were still being played at press time.
Cebu Province, whose day started with Jasper Lance Basister’s gold-medal finish in the Boys Secondary Shot Put early in the morning, has a 1-3-3- gold-silver-bronze tally, while Mandaue also claimed a gold after Jemalyn de la Cerna ruled the Girls Secondary high jump with a 1.3-meter clearance.
Basister logged a 9.01m throw, giving superintendent Recaredo Borgonia something to smile about after all the pressure of being the meet’s host division.
Cebu City claimed two golds in the Secondary division, where Angelica Lado clinched the gold in Girls shot put event.
Lone gold
Cebu City’s lone gold in the Elementary division was courtesy of Atillo, who ruled the Girls 100m hurdles in 19.58 seconds, beating Negros Oriental-Bayawan’s Daisy Beras by .41 seconds. Cebu Province’s Elen Joy Embrada clocked 20.17 seconds for the bronze.
Mae Tingcang got Siquijor its only gold – the Girls’ Elementary shot put – with 7.74m lob.
Negros Oriental-Bayawan, with two golds and two silvers, finished third overall.
Danao City and Siquijor have one gold apiece, bit no silvers or bronzes.
Glenn Durano cleared 1.65m to snare the top plum of the Boys Secondary high jump, besting the identical record of Cebu City’s Anselmo Escaga, who had five tries. Durano, who gave Danao City its sole gold so far, needed only one try. Siquijor’s gold came from the Girls Secondary shot put, where Ma. Ethel Tingcang finished with a field-best 7.74m.
Meantime, Cebu City is assured of, at the very least, 10 bronze medals in taekwondo, with seven hopefuls in the Elementary and three in the Secondary class.
Danao City claimed two finals slots in the Elementary Girls taekwondo – the 5’0”-5’3” Class and 4’0”-4’3” Class – along with two semifinal slots. Mandaue City, on the other hand, is already assured of four bronzes in the event.
Secondary taekwondo, meanwhile, saw four bets from Lapu-Lapu barge into the semifinals, while Negros Oriental Bayawan, Cebu Province and Lapu-Lapu each sent one player to the next round.
Blowouts
At the Alcantara Big Dome, basketball got underway with a series of blowouts. Defending champion Cebu City fired a warning shot with a 88-51 demolition job of Bais City, Cebu Province then followed suit by butchering Tagbilaran, 100-57, while Orientral Negros drubbed Dumagauete, 94-62.
In the other games, lawn tennis kicked off its elimination phase with Cebu City’s Jin Querubin winning her first Singles match over Mary Grace Enriquez of Danao City, 6-0, 6-0. Teammate Nikon Caraballe fell to Negros Oriental-Bayawan’s Christopher Ian Yape, 0-6, 0-6.
The four-hectare, three-diamond field of the Garcia Sports Complex in Ronda hosted the baseball and softball events, where Cebu Province and Mandaue have already posted one win apiece at both events. Dumaguete also won its first assignment in baseball.
In badminton, James Bell Rizon posted the Niños first win of the day with a 15-4, 15-1 win against his opponent from Negros Orintal-Bayawan.
Cebu City also did well in its bailiwick event, table tennis, where it already has three bets – Stephen Jaca in the Boys Elementary Singles and Kitt Moreno and Mary Angelie Motel in the Secondary class – clinching semis slots.
In sepak takraw, Siquijor and Lapu-Lapu leads the cast with a win and a loss each while in sipa, Danao, Cebu Province, Negros Oriental-Bayawan and Bais City scored a win each.
