27 barangay chiefs show up By Jeanette P. Malinao Sun.Star Staff Reporter
TWENTY-SEVEN of Barili’s 42 barangays were represented in yesterday’ meeting with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia despite warnings from the camp of Mayor Chuck Nemeño that they will be dropped from his political group.
Although they were invited, Nemeño and majority of the town councilors snubbed the meeting, where Garcia read a letter stating the last request of the late mayor Robert Alquizola.
Granting Alquizola’s last wish, Garcia announced that the Province will give funds to improve the services of the town’s water system, and for the completion of the market.
The governor inspected the market and talked with vendors, who told her of the inconvenience that they are currently experiencing.
Willing to help
Garcia called on town officials to set aside politics and cooperate with the Province, which is willing to give financial help.
She yesterday distributed P1.97 million worth of projects to the barangays.
She told them that it was just the “first batch” of released projects the barangays requested through resolutions.
Earlier, Nemeño admitted in an interview with Sun.Star that it was an agreement among members of their party that those who will attend Garcia’s meeting will be dropped from their lineup.
But Garcia said she called Nemeño, who told her it was the instructions of Rep. Antonio Yapha (Cebu, 3rd district).
Yapha is an ally of former senator John Osmeña, a political foe of the Garcia family.
On the threat that they will be dropped from the line up of Osmeña’s group, barangay captains in yesterday’s meeting yelled, “Kami, ma-erase? Basin silay ma-erase!”
Capitol consultant Pablo John Garcia, who accompanied the governor, also told the local officials that progress of Barili depends on the barangay leaders.
Politics
“If town officials don’t approach the Capitol for help, the Provincial Government is willing to approach you,” he said.
Garcia said there’s no turning back now for the barangay leaders who chose to defy the warning of their group just to attend the meeting.
“You chose progress over the selfish and political interest of some. Kanang bahad-bahad o hulga-hulga, binayot man na,” she said.
Also yesterday, Barili’s local leaders prayed for the late Guibuangan barangay captain Gregorio Torres, who died Monday night.
ABC president Avelina Vicentello lamented that she was the one who would have wanted Torres brought to the hospital. During the emergency, the ambulance did not have fuel, she said. (JPM)
