Efforts underway to save ‘dead’ Butuanon River
IT seems the environment department and some sectors have not given up on the Butuanon River, which had been considered biologically dead as early as the 1980s.
On Saturday, the Environment Management Bureau (EMB) 7 and the Mandaue City Government will hold the “Suroy Sapa” (river tour) in Butuanon River in an effort to raise awareness about the need to rehabilitate the body of water.
The EMB 7 wants to replicate the Suroy Sapa in Guadalupe River last month, in which some residents took part in determining the quality of the river.
The river tour in Butuanon is one of the activities of the DENR during the Earth Day celebration.
A summit on environmental issues will be held on Friday, which has been declared as International Earth Day since 1970, in Mandaue City.
Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 Executive Director Clarence Baguilat said the focus of this year’s celebration is the rehabilitation and protection of rivers in the country.
During a Kapihan forum among government information officers, the EMB 7 urged the public to do their share in caring for the earth’s natural resources.
Meanwhile, Project Seahorse has joined a worldwide movement promoting marine resource conservation called, Dive In to Earth Day.
Project Seahorse is conducting a series of activities this week, including an underwater cleanup, mangrove planting and coastal resource exhibit in Getafe, Bohol. (LAP)
