Cebu City starts to pull away By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Correspondent
DUMANJUG,Cebu – Cebu City’s lead in the medal race seems to get bigger by the minute.
Cebu City, which captured four golds in athletics and racked five more in the taekwondo on Monday night, continued to pile up the medals yesterday at the 2005 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet.
The Niños amassed 21 more gold medals in the medal-rich swimming and athletics events yesterday, and by unofficial count now have 30 golds, 23 silvers and 15 bronzes – head and shoulders above the 11-team field.
Cebu Province ranks second overall with seven golds after claiming two golds each in athletics and swimming yesterday.
Tagbilaran City, fresh off winning the overall championship of the taekwondo Secondary division (four golds and two silvers), claimed one silver and two bronze medals in the Elementary division to clinch seven golds overall.
Danao and Mandaue ranked No.4 overall with four golds apiece. Danao’s gold medals mostly came from the taekwondo event Monday night (three golds, four silvers and eight bronzes).
Cebu City also claimed two golds in gymnastics, where it dominated the competition by claiming five of the six medals at stake, including two golds and two silvers. Only Mandaue City’s Mary Ann Tumulak, who aced the bronze in the Secondary division, prevented a clean sweep by Cebu City.
At press time, swimming, boxing and basketball games were still in progress, while dancesport was yet to get underway.
In basketball, defending champion Mandaue posted a 100-71 win over Talisay City on Monday night, Bais defeated Dumaguete City, 78-64, Talisay drubbed Tagbilaran, 86-50, and Cebu City posted an 87-75 win over Negros Oriental-Bayawan at the Alcantara Big Dome.
