SSS suspends 5T dormant pensioner accounts in banks
THE Social Security System has suspended more than 5,000 of the 21,000 pensioners’ accounts that have been lying dormant for over a year now in various banks, a top official said.
“We do not know if owners of these dormant accounts are alive or not. We sent out letters to them between April to October last year, but they have not responded,” SSS president and chief executive officer Corazon de la Paz said.
SSS started a census of its pensioners last year to purge from its roster those who have died, remarried or recovered from their disabilities.
The program, called Annual Confirmation of Pensioners was part of reforms intended to protect the viability of the fund. The SSS has deputized bank tellers and regular SSS employees to confirm that pensioners are alive and eligible to continue receiving pensions. Barangay chairmen and post office personnel can also certify pensioners’ existence.
Pensioners living abroad can send a photocopy of their passport and other identification cards, such as a driver’s permit or a license issued by the Professional Regulation Commission.
