Coastal road open to traffic this weekend
Traffic in the south might be slightly eased this weekend, as the South Coastal Road will be opened to make way for the Kite Festival sponsored by the Cebu City Youth Development Council.
Cebu City Councilor Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem told Sun.Star Cebu last night the roads will be opened to traffic this Saturday and Sunday, but only up to the Cebu City side where the event will be held.
The coastal road has been closed to the public for 13 days now. But Jakosalem said he talked to Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, who told him to open the road.
Jakosalem, committee on transportation chairman, also said the road will be opened if events such as barangay projects and races will be held at the South Reclamation Project in the future.
He added that they will ask the mayor if he will be willing to reopen the road until construction of the tunnel segment will make it impossible for vehicles to pass.
Meanwhile, City Hall may start issuing today individual passes to private motorists who have applied for security clearances from the mayor to enter the coastal road.
City Administrator Francisco “Bimbo” Fernandez said the IDs are ready and all the City has to do is call the applicants to visit City Hall to have their photos taken.
Fernandez confirmed that the mayor has ordered to “open the coastal road to the public” over the weekend for the kite festival.
“We can always guard the activity. There’s no problem with putting up guards there,” he said. (MEA/With GAC)
