Niños win over 50 more golds

DUMANJUG, Cebu – An avalanche occurred here yesterday. An avalanche of gold medals for Cebu City, that is.

No fatalities were reported, but plenty spirits have been crushed by the Niños after they dominated the gymnastics, swimming, badminton and table tennis events en route to amassing 53 golds, 39 silvers and 20 bronzes yesterday in the 2005 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet here.

Cebu City is now closing in on the century mark with an unofficial medal count of 83 golds, 34 silvers and 15 bronzes, and now stands head and shoulders above the rest of the field.

Cebu City’s gymnasts, who hauled 16 golds, 13 silvers and 11 bronzes in a jaw-dropping performance, were largely responsible for Cebu’s staggering loot for the day.

Archers

Cebu City’s female archers were also on target yesterday with three golds, two silvers, and two bronzes. Archer Mirasol Baring contributed two golds by winning the 50-meter competition and overall scoring, while Ma. Lourdes Colegado won another gold in the 30-meter heat of the individual Fita standard round.

Mandaue City’s Ryan Ursonal, however, reigned supreme in Boys archery, winning all of Mandaue City’s three golds in the event. Archery’s Olympic round gets underway today at 8 a.m. at the Ronda Town Plaza.

Badminton yielded five golds and two silvers for Cebu City, while table tennis claimed five more.
Cebu’s boxers also hit their marks yesterday, tying powerhouse Mandaue City’s haul with two gold medals for the day.

Batted sports

At Ronda’s three-diamond reclamation area, Cebu Province clinched the gold in little league baseball after defeating Mandaue City, 2-0, yesterday morning, while Cebu City defeated Mandue City in baseball, and Lapu-Lapu in Girls softball in the semifinals yesterday afternoon.

With its double victory, Cebu City is set take on Cebu Province in baseball and Mandaue City for the gold medals at 8 a.m. today.

Cebu City failed to snatch a single gold in danceport Tuesday night, netting only three bronzes, while losing to Cebu Province, 0-2, in the sepak takraw gold-medal match. Danao claimed a gold by topping the sipa event.

In basketball, Cebu City barged into the finals after defeating defending champion Mandaue, 85-70, in an emotional encounter that resulted into an early exit by Cebu City coach Rudy Enterina, who got thrown out for unsportsmanlike behavior at the 6:35 mark in the second half.

Mandaue still has a chance to claim the other finals slot if it wins against the winner of the Bais City-Oriental Negros match, which was still in progress at press time.
