Zambo del Norte, Cavite join NBC

THE Cavite Insurers and Zamboanga del Norte Hornbills became the latest addition to the National Basketball Conference (NBC) and will participate in the 2005 Panasonic-NBC National Championship.

The second season will start on Saturday 4 p.m. at the Cuneta Astrodome with the Spring and Jets clashing in the lone opener.

Guv and mayor

The Far Eastern Insurance-backed Cavite is owned by Bacoor Vice Mayor Edwin Malvar and supported by Cavite Gov. Irineo “Ayong” Maliksi. The Hornbills are owned by Zamboanga del Norte Gov. Rolando Yebes and Dipolog City Mayor Roberto Uy.

The Insurers, who placed third behind the RP-Cebuana Lhuillier and Parañaque Jets in the recent NBC pre-season tournament, become the sixth team in the Northern Conference. The other three are conference champions Forward Taguig, Laguna Spring and the Baguio Cardinals.

“I want to inspire the youth of our province to be more involved in sports,” Malvar said.

Cavite coach Segundo “Bong” dela Cruz recently added MBA veteran Willie Mejia to bolster his team’s young core, led by former Jose Rizal University Heavy Bomber Mcdonald Santos, Efren Valdes, Far Eastern University’s Cyril Santiago and Las Piñas College standouts Jun Pañares, Eljun Lapera and Stephen Mopera.

The Hornbills, on the other hand, will join the defending national champion Tribu Sugbu, Ozamiz Cotta, Iloilo Warriors, Cagayan de Oro Stars and fellow expansion teams Valencia Golden Harvest and Iligan City Crusaders in the tough Southern Conference. (RCM)
