Niños 11-time champ By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Correspondent
DUMANJUG, Cebu– Cebu Province swept the Elementary volleyball in the last day of competitions yesterday, but there was no stopping Cebu City from getting the overall championship of the 2005 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) Meet.
It was the 11th straight Cviraa championship for Cebu City, which added only six golds yesterday, but still stood head and shoulders above the rest in the official medal tally with a total of 131 golds, 116 silvers and 95 bronzes.
Cebu City, however, failed to duplicate its record-setting 190-79-55 finish in Dumaguete City last year.
Cebu Province placed second in the overall standings with a 54-46-53 haul, while Mandaue City, which won six more golds yesterday to improve its loot to 39-37-27, impressively finished third in the 12-team tilt.
Cebu Province, which already aced the Elementary Boys gold in volleyball last Thursday, completed its domination of the Elementary level as its Girls Elementary volleyball squadron of Christine Marquez, Rasha Marie Perbida, Shiela Marie Densing, Roxanne Marie Pontillas, Methosheena Bate, Kia Krishna Allego, Hannah Marie Bucio, Athena Sucalit, Gretel Butaslac, Ma. Cristy Cui, Rothmarie Del Rosario and Judy Ann Ceniza drubbed Cebu City, 25- 23, 21- 25, 25- 22, to win the six golds at stake in the event.
Mandaue City’s six golds also came from the volleyball event, as its Secondary Boys spikers pulled off a thrilling five-set victory over Cebu City, 14- 25, 25- 23, 25- 21, 24- 22.
Cebu City, on the other hand, did not end the day without a gold. Its Secondary Girls Volleyball team needed only three sets to dispatch Mandaue City in the gold medal match.
Meanwhile, the devastatingly beautiful Rogelie Catcutan, a 13-year-old junior high from Tanjay City’s Immaculate Heart Academy, was crowned Ms. Cviraa 2005 at the Stage of Time in Dumanjug Wednesday night.
A long-limbed stunner who champions environmental causes, Catacutan nearly swept the minor awards en route to winning the tiara, winning the Best in Production Number, Best in Sports Wear, Best in Casual Wear and Best in Evening Gown.
