Cebu exporters share patent
By Aurelia l. Castro

THE presidents of two Cebu fashion and home accessories exporting companies signed a contract for a utility model patent transfer last Friday at City Sports Club Cebu.

Tambuli Fashion & Home Accessories Inc. and Natures Legacy Eximport Inc., with Ong Bagay-Villamor & Fabiosa law firm, also known as IPRotect Cebu, signed a contract where Natures Legacy Eximport Inc. will share its patent on “Simulated Natural Looking Stonecast with an Embedded Metallic Surface Design Component Composition and Articles made there from,” with Tambuli Fashion & Home Accessories, which will expand its product lines by obtaining the patent transfer.

Tambuli Fashion has a worldwide market of its fashion accessories like jewelry designs and home accessories like sculptures, candle holders and wall decor created from the combinations of cast stone and other metal and natural materials.

“Europe is our biggest market. Buyers abroad love our products for its uniqueness and creativity made by Filipinos,” said Colette Goldstein, president of Tambuli Fashion.

Tambuli Fashion & Home Accessories Inc. makes around 50 designs every month.

On the other hand, Natures Legacy Eximport Inc. is an exporter of home furnishings and accessories to the United States, Europe and Asia. One of the recipients of last year’s Golden Shell Award for its excellence in marketing and design, Natures Legacy Eximport Inc. has numerous registrations of various stone-cast compositions.

Both exporters have international patents and copyrights of their products, said Pedro Delantar, Natures Legacy Eximport Inc. president.

“We invite and encourage other patent holders to join our alliance so we can work together in protecting one another and helping one another as we head for more stretch in the global market,” he said.

A patent is an exclusive right granted by a government to an inventor for anything he has created, like machines, electrical and electronic devices, and designs, among many others, said Ong. Through patent and industrial design registration, owners will have a monopoly on the right to use, manufacture and sell their products for a limited period of time.

Andrew Ong, senior partner of Ong Bagay-Villamor & Fabiosa law firm said: “If you can’t invent for your own, you can buy a patent from other manufacturers. That also means that patent holders can earn money from their patent. This is a healthy way of fighting piracy, which kills our industry.”

“Another great thing about cross-patenting or patent sharing is that it extends your period of protection. The more you cooperate with other patent holders, the longer the protection becomes for you,” said Ong.

He warned industries that without a patent, anybody can just copy their designs and creations.
