Marikina seeks to do biz with Cebu
MARIKINA, the Philippine city long famed for its shoes, is looking for business opportunities with Cebu.
Last Friday, Marikina City Mayor Ma. Lourdes Fernando said Marikina is now looking for suppliers of shells and other indigenous materials that can be incorporated in the shoes and fashion accessories.
“Let us cooperate to make our shoe manufacturing industry world class again,” she told mayors of different municipalities and cities in Cebu during the launch of the Marikina Shoe Caravan.
The caravan showcases the world-famous Marikina shoes and other products from Marikina City. It is here in Cebu for the first time.
Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Bayani Fernando was among those who graced the launching of the caravan at the Argao Trading Post in the Municipality of Argao.
Mayor Fernando said this is the first time the shoe caravan went out of Luzon to promote Marikina-made shoes, particularly those from small manufacturers.
Some 19 exhibitors, who have been active participants of the shoe caravan since its inception three years ago, are here in Cebu to sell their shoes and accessories at factory prices.
“Their continuing participation is a testimony to the viability of the shoe caravan in promoting their products,” she said.
Fernandez said the Marikina Shoe Caravan is also a vehicle in promoting local tourism, one of the major thrusts of Marikina, aside from seeking partners and doing business with the areas it will visit.
Aside from Argao, the one-month shoe caravan will also cover Dumanjug, Mandaue City, Toledo City and Cebu City, which Marikina City signed sisterhood agreements with.
During the launching, 2nd District Rep. Simeon Kintanar encouraged Argao Mayor Wilfredo Caminero and the mayors of the other municipalities and areas to develop the shoe manufacturing industry in their respective areas.
“We hope Marikina will inspire Argao and share their technology with us,” he said.
MMDA Chairman Fer-nando said developing two or more industries enabled Marikina to sustain its economic development
He explained that Mari-kina’s primary industry is farming. But it developed the shoe manufacturing industry to create employment and sustain the income of the farmers while they waited for the harvest season. JBN
