Asian filmfest and a Santacruzan for a cause By Sam Costanilla Spotlight
UNETHICAL. It is heartwarming to note that the country's top artists and entertainers have decided to speak as one against unethical talk shows on television. Their move is also aimed at stopping the indiscriminate airing of sex-video "exposes." Award-winning scriptwriter and director Jose Javier Reyes was right in stating that it (the airing of sex-video exposes) has become a virtual cottage industry, a trend, like massacre movies in the mid-90s. To me, disciplining erring television networks, program hosts and even interviewees is the call of the hour. While we have the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas and the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, the airing of unethical and undesirable programs and some of their segments continues without letup. If only advertisers would stop sponsoring these types of programs, we can be sure that they would no longer get aired. Sensible television talk shows are becoming rare nowadays. Something should be done to reverse the situation.

E-MAIL. Abe Pagtama (marvistafilms@yahoo.com), a Fil-Am actor based in California, wrote that the Asian Film Festival would definitely be held from April 28 to May 5 in Los Angeles. The festival features short films produced and directed by Asian-Americans, including Mike Tuviera, son of Eat Bulaga producer Tony Tuviera. Abe added that Mike took his undergraduate course in Ateneo de Manila, majoring in film. Since then, he started working in the film industry and television in the Philippines before deciding to pursue his masters in the US.

FILM. Abe announced that Mike's film is titled Open Mike and the story is about Mike Sheppard, a stand-up comic who meets Ligaya, an intelligent and unbearably cute Filipina. Mike quickly discovers that to get to Ligaya, he will have to go through her tough-as-nails older brother Jojo, her dynamo young brother Eddie, her perceptually-happy parents and her ego eccentric grandfather who may or may not have been the head of Filipino Mafia, played by Abe himself. As the two get closer, Mike is faced with the dilemma of choosing between the love of his life and the love for the spotlight. Open Mike will be shown at the Directors' Guild of America Theater at Sunset blvd. Aside from Abe, the other cast members are Arthur Hayes, Michelle Bangwa, Manny Gavino, Paulo Morante, Thelma Sugay and Joseph Gelito. For more information about the Asian Film Festival, Abe is encouraging interested parties to visit www.vconline.org.

BAND. Do you have PR skill? Then go ahead and use it to earn cash. You simply promote a local four-member acoustic band to play at social functions, like parties, birthday celebrations, wedding receptions, fiestas, corporate events and other special gatherings. The band's rate (i.e., talent fee) varies on the location and hours of performance. Interested individuals may now coordinate with Celeste by calling or texting her cell phone number 0927-8120578 or e-mailing celeste2533@yahoo.com.

SANTACRUZAN. Here is another commendable activity that deserves the general public's support, if only for its very noble intention. The proceeds will be used for the salaries of teacher-interpreters at the First High School for the Hearing-Impaired in Basak this city, as well as for the Mandaue Sped school, the maintenance of two daycare centers and for the yearly Shattered Silence, a gathering of more than a thousand hearing-impaired students. The organizers envision the Santacruzan to become a world-class event for local and foreign tourists as it features the traditional parade of reynas and zagalas as well as flowers and religious icons. Joining forces in organizing this year's Santacruzan are the Cebu Vistors and Convention Bureau and Quota International Club of Cebu. Be at the Casino Español in Ranudo on May 8 for this major fund-raising event.

DATE. It was another "honeymoon," in a secluded resort south of this province, for two public servants. No less than the lady mayor of this municipality where the resort is situated arranged the two officials' stay. (E-mail: samcost@yahoo.com or call/text 0915-4992844.)
