2 private groups provide top students free schooling By CHARMAINE Y. RODRIGUEZ Sun.Star Staff Reporter
FOR over a decade now, two civic organizations have been giving college scholarship grants to deserving high school students.
On its 26th year, the Claude M. Wilson Scholarship of Rhine Marketing Corp. is choosing 10 more scholars this year.
The scholarship is awarded to winners of the annual search for the 10 Most Outstanding High School Students of Cebu. High school graduates who belong to the upper 10 percent of their batch compete in three phases: a written exam, panel interview and on-the-spot essay writing contest.
Winners get P16,000 per semester for a maximum of five years.
For its part, the Tanchan Foundation, Inc., together with Zonta International and Cebu Normal University (CNU), is giving away scholarship grants to 13 outstanding female students who do not have the “financial capacity to go into the teaching profession in the field of mathematics and sciences.”
The grant will cover tuition and other school fees, monthly transportation, uniform allowance and book allowances.
The foundation has helped a total of 24 students finish an education course. It is currently assisting 26 aspiring teachers.
But for students to receive these privileges, they must meet the qualifications and pass a screening process. To keep the scholarship, they also have to maintain their grades.
Tanchan Foundation only allows female applicants, who should come from families with an annual income of not more than P60,000.
They must belong to the upper 10 percent of the graduating class, as certified by the high school principal, and they must pass CNU’s qualifying examination.
Applicants have to pass a qualifying examination on May 6 at 9 a.m. The top 20 students will still have to take the on-the-spot essay composition test and a panel interview.
The best 10 applicants will get the Tanchan Foundation scholarship grants, while three others will benefit from the privileges given by Cebu First Royal Foundation.
They have to maintain a cumulative average of 2.0 and must not fail in any subject or the scholarship will be forfeited.
As for Rhine Marketing Corp., the search for the Ten Most Outstanding High School Students of Cebu started last April 9 with the qualifying examination.
According to Girlie Cabije, assistant coordinator of the search, an average of 200 students apply for the scholarship each year, but they only get the top 30.
The top 30 applicants already underwent the panel interview last April 21 to 22 and the on-the-spot essay composition last Saturday.
The best 10 students will be proclaimed on May 17.
They may enroll in any school accredited by the Department of Education and take up a course up to a maximum of five years.
The scholarship is extended on a semestral basis until graduation. The student has to maintain an average cumulative rating of not less than 1.70.
The scholars must be full-time students.
