Fire razes 8 homes; kids’ play blamed

A FATHER and his two children’s futile attempt to stop a fire from spreading in their house left them and seven other families in Sitio Lusimba, Barangay Pardo, Cebu City homeless.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) tapped the alarm at 3:08 p.m. yesterday. Firefighters claimed they had the blaze under control in eight minutes but that was already too late for the eight houses that were packed together in a private lot.

The two grandsons of Consorcia Sabal, aged four and five, were seen playing with a lighter on the ground floor of her three-story house. Minutes later, thick black smoke were seen coming out of her house.

Light materials

Her brother Bernardino Sabal Sr., 57, who lives next door, was first to notice the fire. However, it grew quickly as Consor-cia’s house was made of light materials.

With children Bernardino Jr., 26, and Religan, 20, in tow, Bernardino Sr. rushed to the scene in an attempt to douse the flames, but he and his two children suffered burns instead in their shoulders and arms.

Fire investigator SFO1 Frank Donozo said paramedics of its emergency medical service van later treated the victims.

He said the ravaged area is 150 feet from the main road and some meter distance from another private lot.

First alarm

The fire was raised only to first alarm, which requires the nearest fire stations to send fire trucks.

Firefighters once again cited the lack of an access road to the affected area and people carrying their belongings who blocked their way.

Estimated damage was placed at P85,000.

Citing similar cases, Donozo said children should not be left playing with matches, candles or lighter inside the house to avoid accidents.

As for the two grandsons of Sabal who were blamed for the blaze, they are safe. AIV
