Gas leak poisons 8 kids, 2 adults

TEN persons, eight of them children, were reportedly poisoned after inhaling acetylene gas at noon last Saturday in Sitio Kilawan, Barangay Tangke, Talisay City.

SPO2 Jose Noel Tactores identified the victims as Jessa Banaay, eight; Jessie Banaay, 11; Christian Abatayo, three; Vicky Abatayo, four; Laura Abatayo, one; Maogin Amistad, seven months old; six-month old Apple Oca; Ricky Oca, four; Guillermo Oca, 53; and Manuel Oca, 38.

All 10 were rushed to the Talisay City District Hospital after they reportedly inhaled acetylene fumes from a tank belonging to Hermilo Daan.

However, radio dyMF reported that it was Manuel Oca who owned the tank and was trying to sell the tank to a certain Myra Ornea.

The radio report yesterday morning stated that Ornea refused to buy the used tank because it already smelled foul.

The police report said Daan had ordered somebody to throw the four-foot tall tank into the sea because of the smell, but the person he ordered did not heed this.

The man identified as Romano Bacho reportedly tried to sell this to a junk shop, but was turned down because of the foul odor.

Everyone Bacho passed by inhaled the gas and experienced difficulty in breathing.

A team led by acting Talisay City Police Chief Joseph Mangaron went to the area and noted a foul smell as soon as they reached Sitio Kilawan. MEA/With VLM of Superbalita
