Speak out: No barriers at the time of accident By BENJAMIN A. SANCHEZ Casuntingan, Mandaue City
I WAS the unfortunate driver of the Mitsubishi Strada that fell into the crevice along M. L. Quezon St. around 8:30 p.m. last April 23. I was on my way to the Maguikay flyover to proceed to Super Metro Mandaue when the accident happened just 300 meters away from my house in Casuntingan.
I am aware of the diggings on the road so I was careful to avoid the pieces of wood sticking out of a hole in the middle of the road. However, there were no other devices that could have made me avoid the deep crevice where I fell.
It was a good thing I wasn’t injured and many bystanders immediately came to pull me out of my vehicle.
The picture that was printed in Sun.Star yesterday (p. A22 in print edition) showed my vehicle inside the crevice. The picture also showed barriers placed along the gap. I would like to clarify that those barriers were not there when the accident happened. They were put there after I fell. If those barriers were there, I wouldn’t have fallen into the pit.
I just want to clarify my side because people who saw the picture might wonder how I could have fallen into the pit with the barriers in place.
I did not jump over those barriers. There were no warning devices.
I urge the contractor of the project to please install the necessary warning devices along the project site. Also, please cover the holes until the con-tractor’s technical personnel actually work on them. Drivers may be able to avoid the barriers along the gaps in the middle of the road but what if somebody might replicate my experience and this time, fall into that circular pit?
With these diggings, it’s dangerous to drive along M. L. Quezon St. at night. People said I am the third victim in that area alone.
