Antonio wrests solo lead in chess championship By MIKE T. LIMPAG Sun.Star Correspondent
GRANDMASTER Joey Antonio scored his sixth win, beating Cebuano International Master Richard Bitoon in the seventh round to take the solo lead in the Filway/Time Life Active Open Chess Championships yesterday at SM City-Cebu.
Antonio now has 6.5 points in the nine-round event on six wins and a draw during the sixth round against IM Mark Paragua.
Paragua is at joint second with six points after defeating NM Oliver Barbosa in the seventh round.
Also with six points are Fide Master Oliver Dimakiling, IM Idelfonso Datu, IM Barlo nadera and GM Nelson Mariano.
Dimakiling defeated NM Emmanuel Senador in the seventh, while Datu and the Mandaue-raised Nadera also had wins over NM Elmer Sumngat and NM Rustum Tolentino.
Mariano defeated NM Ernesto Fernandez in the sixth.
Meanwhile, Asia’s first GM Eugene Torre is at 10th spot with 5.5 points, joining five others. Torre defeated Henry Lopez.
Others with 5.5 points are Bitoon, Rolando Nolte, who won over NM Abdullah Unding, Cebu’s Merben Roque, who defeated Rhobel Legaspi and Glenn Pardillo, who defeated NM Levi Mercado.
The last two rounds of the Open, which offers P30,000 to the champion, and results in other divisions were still unavailable at press time last night.
