Pau de Arco stays alive

VETERAN-LADEN Pau de Arco pulled another important win to keep its hopes alive following a thrilling 5-4 win over Pusok All-Star in the Osaka Iridology-1st Cebu Men’s Open Softball tournament at the Labangon Elementary School yesterday.

Not to be outdone, Fitrum Green Tea Extract displayed another splendid performance with a 10-0 called-off win over Berns Ang.

Carcar Selection nearly dropped the upset axe over powerhouse Salazar College of Science and Institute of Technology after leading 1-0 at the top of the third inning, when a force of nature in the form of heavy rain forced a cancelation of the game.

Forfeiture

The Rebels Softball Club, on the other hand, won by forfeiture over TPG in the tournament that is also supported by Crunch Chicken, Rudy Project and SirLitz.

Energized by its come-from-behind win over Carcar the other Sunday, Pau de Arco started hot and held back Pusok with tough on defense to avenge its 3-8 defeat last March 13.

Leo Caballero, Cebu Association of Batted Sports vice president for softball, started the inning with a long hit to the centerfield before Nelson Bacaltos’ triple to the center gave Pau de Arco two homes.

Bacaltos’ RBI slug carried Caballero and Rico Ylaya to the homeplate and he used the error on first base to give Pau de Arco a 3-0 lead in the opening frame.

Pusok came back blazing in the second inning with Tony Ongco and Edwin Ongco making steals to close the score, 2-3, at the top of the second inning.

But Ylaya answered with another run following an error of the Pusok third-base man and Vic Masong hit a flyer to the left field to give Pau de Arco a 5-3 lead.

Pusok tried to catch up but the RBI of Joseph Patalinghug that carried Junito Amit home on the fourth and the double of Henry Ongco in the fifth were not enough to beat Pau de Arco.

Strikeouts

Meanwhile, ace-pitcher Felix Custodio did wonders for Fitrum as he struck out five Berns Ang batters for its fourth win in five games.

Fitrum’s amazing victory was capped by a dazzling second inning when seven Fitrum runners made it to the homeplate – highlighted by a Rey Olasiman RBI homer that also sent Allan Gabuya, Inting Bacalla and JR Babatid to the homeplate. Fitrum had a total seven runs on the second to make it 9-0. Francis Desalogo scored the 10th run at the top of the seventh.

On Sunday, the games will be held in Perilos, Carcar as part of the league’s province-wide promotion of the game.
