Boljoon mother blames cassava for sudden pain

A MOTHER and her son suffered stomachaches and began vomiting after reportedly eating suman-budbod made of cassava in Barangay North Granada, Boljoon last Friday.

Rolinda Bequilla, 44, and Kenneth Bequilla, 21, were rushed to the Oslob District Hospital after they began to feel sick that evening.

Both are now out of harm’s way, said Oslob District Hospital midwife Fleda Tabanao.

According to Boljoon Police investigator SPO3 Emmanuel Villareal, the two bought the cassava treat from a widow in their barangay, whom the police have yet to question, in the absence of a complaint.

Rolinda and Kenneth reportedly bought the cassava treat at 8:35 a.m. and began to feel sick that night.

Both blamed it on the suman-budbod.

Villareal, though, said the two have not appeared before their station to file a complaint against the vendor.

He said he did not speak with the victims personally, and that a neighbor merely showed up at the station to have the incident recorded.

Tabanao said the two were not seriously ill and that it was only Kenneth who had to be confined. He was discharged from the hospital at 1 p.m. yesterday.

Last March 9, some 27 pupils were killed while more than 100 were hospitalized after eating caramelized cassava snacks sold outside their school in Barangay San Jose, Mabini, Bohol.

The National Bureau of Investigation 7 concluded that pesticide, not the crop’s cyanide content, caused the food poisoning.

More than a hundred cases were filed against vendor Anna Maria Luyong, who was also confined at the hospital.

The Provincial Prosecutor in Tagbilaran City has decided to file the case before the Regional Trial Court.

The tragedy raised concerns about food safety in schools and the lack of funds allocated for municipal health services. MEA
