Collector killed in vigilante fashion By Jovy S. Taghoy Sun.Star Staff Reporter
A floor dealer-collector who was mistaken for a police informer was gunned down yesterday afternoon in Sitio Paradise II, Barangay Kinasang-an, Cebu City. Homicide investigators led by SPO1 Jay Yballe, however, ruled out robbery as a motive in the fatal shooting of Henry Decoriza Mallari, 41, of 028 Lower Torre, Barangay Inayawan.
Mallari died of gunshot wounds in the right cheekbone and right temple.
Yballe’s team recovered one deformed slug and an empty .45 shell at the crime scene.
Mallari’s P6,000 cash and wallet were found in his pocket.
Yballe said he will coordinate with personnel of the Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center to determine if Mallari was jailed for any crime.
Criminal suspects and those with criminal records have been summarily executed in Cebu City since December last year. The police has listed at least 53 victims who have been felled by vigilantes.
The most recent case was last May 6, when a 14-year-old boy was gunned down while watching a television show outside a sari-sari store in Barangay Ermita.
The killings have continued despite condemnation from Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, a lawyers’ group and other sectors.
Yesterday, responding investigators and policemen found Mallari sprawled near a vacant house in the interior portion of Sitio Paradise II past 1 p.m.
No one from the area came forward to help the investigators identify the killers.
“Nobody would speak up. Pulos ambot (They kept saying they knew nothing),” Yballe lamented.
Yballe said Mallari’s death could be a case of mistaken identity.
Initial reports Yballe’s team gathered revealed that several lawless elements residing in the area have been suspecting Mallari of being an informer of the Cebu City Police Office.
Hazel Entize, Mallari’s younger sister, told Yballe that her brother was a dealer and collector of Island Marketing, a company in Pagsabungan, Mandaue City that sells floor wax.
Mallari was not a regular employee of the company but only received a commission from what he generated in sales.
Entize said Mallari’s assignment in Kinasang-an was new; he only recently replaced the previous collector.
Mallari’s body was brought to San Fernando Funeral Homes for autopsy. (JST)
