Speak out: A new lawyer’s tale By Valeriano S. Loon
Firstly, I would say that the University of the Visayas where I graduated is truly a school with a social conscience. With only P200 as entrance fee there, I eventually earned my ECE and LL.B. degrees.
I got a diploma for my engineering course in 1997 and passed the board exams that same year. While reviewing for the bar, I also took the Realtor’s Board and passed it in 2003. I took the bar exams in 2004, then my oath as an attorney last April 29.
I finished my elementary education at the Maño Elementary School, and high school at the San Remegio Barangay High School. I went to Manila to earn some money and landed a job as a houseboy in Quezon City.
During this time, I pursued my studies and finished vocational course at the Samson Institute of Technology. With that, I was able to work at La Tondena Distillers, Inc. in Cebu.
When my six-month contract was over, I enrolled in the Security Guard Training Course of Centurion Security Agency and got a job as security guard in 1991 at the Alesna and Detective Agency.
In 1993, at the age of 23, I enrolled in UV for an associate in computer science course. I later shifted to ECE with the idea of earning just 72 units for the requirements of becoming a policeman.
I finished my ECE course with the support of my income as a security guard at MCWD.
During this time, however, my family got into an unfair land deal with certain individuals in my hometown. With the goal of helping my family solve its problem, I took up law in 1998, now with an entrance fee of P300.
I wish to thank Alesna Security Agency, MCWD, and UV for helping me in my journey. Then, too, Elias Baquero of Sun.Star and Bantay Radyo, and Bobit Avila, for their great support in my journey.
