CAEC ’96 rips Eco-Tech ’92 for Cecaba title
CEBU Advance Electronic Corp. ’96 clinched its fifth championship, and it made it look easy after an 82-61 rout of Eco-Tech Appliance ’92 in their winner-take-all finals of the 2005 Cecaba’s 7th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup last Sunday at the City Sports Club-Cebu.
On the other hand, dethroned champion Eco-Tech Appliance ’94 settled for the third place after beating Young Builders ’91 in another lopsided fashion, 92-74.
The burly Shaun Christopher Wang had another big night as he romped off with the finals MVP award, his second in the seven-year-old hoopfest. He also won in 1999.
Game high
Wang poured in eight of his game-high tying 16 points during a third-quarter breakaway.
Rogelio Donayre had 14 points, while Jennis Lim and Mark Ryan Babor chipped in 13 and 12 markers, respectively, for Class ’96, which dictated the tempo of the match from start to finish en route to a resounding 21-point blowout.
Class ’96 closed the first half with an eight-point lead, 36-28, but Wang, in connivance with Emmanuel Baron, Lim and Donayre, led a searing 26-10 run in the third canto to pad their lead to an imposing 24-point bulge, 62-38, entering the final 10 minutes.
Class ’92 struggled to make one big miracle in the closing minutes of the game, but its effort was futile as the Class ’96 stalwarts never slowed down until the dying seconds to regain the throne Eco-Tech Appliance ’94 snatched from them last year.
Nevertheless, the Class ’92 cagers can still hold their heads up as they enjoyed their best finish in the league ever, romping off with the Division I title and the season’s runner-up trophy.
Warren William Yu topped Class ’92 with 16 points, but Mitchel Diputado and Ryan Ordes were handcuffed to only nine and five points, respectively.
Meanwhile, guard Anwar Satina showed he deserved the regular season MVP trophy by chalking up 29 points, including 16 in a game-closing 38-14 rally that put the match away.
Satina, who bagged his first MVP commendation, is the league’s second leading scorer this season with an average of 33.56 points per game, third in steals (5.33 spg) and eighth in assists (4.11 apg).
It was an unexpected third-place finish for Class ’94 after being the only team that completed a clean 10-0 sweep in the elimination round.
Deficit offset
Wellington Yu backed Satina with 24 points, while Stanley Gaw and Bronson Peña had 12 markers apiece for Class ’94, which offset a 13-26 deficit at the end of the first quarter with a fierce second-half assault.
Peter Michael de la Torre had 21 points for Class ’91, which duplicated its fourth- place finish last year.
