Cebu bets lead Bacolod jungolf

SIX Cebuano junior golfers are on the driver’s seat going to today’s final round of the VisMin Youth Golf Circuit Bacolod Leg at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club.

Cebu Country Club’s Kathleen Uy, Jovy Manglapus, Stephanie Olea, LJ and LK Go and Alta Vista Golf and Country Club’s Irinia Gabasa took the lead in their respective division in the tournament that has attracted some 115 golfers from Negros, Bukidnon, Iligan and Victorias.

The tournament is the second leg of a series sanctioned by the Philippine Amateur Golf Development Foundation (PAGDF).

Neglected

“The south has always been neglected (by the National Golf Association of the Philippines). As far as golf development is concerned we do not see anything,” PAGDF’s incorporator Alex Montelibano told Sun.Star Cebu in a meeting with golf leaders in the South last year.

The Vismin Youth Golf Tournament is the result of that gathering last year with the first leg held in Cagayan de Oro City. The series is set to close out with the third leg in CCC on May 24-26.

Uy scored 77 and 78 in the first two days for a 10-stroke cushion in the Girls Class A (15-17) over Del Monte GC Lovelyn Guioguio. Manglapus enjoys a five-stroke lead over Negro’s Jan Yang in the Boys Class C (11-12) after scoring 81 and 84 for a two-day total of 165, while club mates VJ Vasandi and Franz Olea are tied at third with 172.

24-stroke lead

Meanwhile, barring any disaster, Stephanie Olea is set to claim the Girls Class C division after scoring 80 and 85 in the first two rounds for a 165 total. Her closest pursuer, club mate Kristine Uy, is 24 strokes back.

LJ Go leads Boys Class D (9-10) with a 154 on rounds of 76s, while Gabasa leads Girls D with a two-day score of 158. LK Go leads Girls Class E (8-10) after scoring 85, two strokes ahead of Rachita Vasandani also of CCC. (ML)
