Cebu’s Lagman boys advance By Glenn C. Michelena Sun.Star Correspondent
CEBU’S local bets were unusually quiet in Day One. Not so in Day Two.
The local entries started to flex their muscles in the second day of the Cebu leg of the Head-Junior Tennis Championships, as the Lagman brothers, Joseph Serra and Juan Paolo Cansino, led a horde of Cebuano netters who scored big wins yesterday at the Cebu Country Club Tennis Courts.
Julius advanced to the second round of the Under-16 Boys after defeating Claro Cebrian, 6-1, 6-1, and also snatched a second-round ticket in the U-18 Boys with a walkover win against Alvin Janson.
Julian, the U-18 Boys second seed, also advanced to the second round via a bye.
Cansino, on the other hand, scored a dramatic 7-5, 6-3 victory over Kuet Carpo to advance to the next round of the U-14 Boys, where he is slated to tussle against Gideon Huyo-a, who posted an action-packed 6-4, 5-7, 10-6, over Geoffrey Pinili yesterday.
Serra made the quarterfinals in the U-16 Boys without breaking a sweat. Serra, who made it past the first round on Monday, leapfrogged over the field after his prospective second-round opponents – either Charlton Bathan or Adrian Doller – both failed to show up for their match, giving Serra a red carpet cruise to the quarterfinals.
Gerard Pinili, who scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over Erick Pepito, also advanced to the U-16 Boys second round, along with Duma Boloto, who trampled Krutch Capidos, 6-0, 6-2, and Vincent Katigbak, after his 5-7, 7-6, 10-4 conquest of Gilfer Lopez.
Along with the Lagman brothers, Ian Yape, who scored a 6-3, 6-0, triumph over Pepito, and Ruby Soquiño, who drubbed Mari Gestosani, 6-2, 6-2, also found their way to the U-18 second round, where they will be joined by Danreb Donio, who trounced Krutch Capidos, 6-1, 6-1, and Bombie Ledesma, whose 6-1, 6-1, victory over Mark Lao earned him a seat in the next round.
In the U-14 division, Cansino and Huyo-a will be joined by Robert Ortelano, who pulled off a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Cyril Camporedondo, Kristoff Carmona, who bested Mario Valencia, 6-1, 6-2, JP Aba, who registered a 6-3, 6-4, triumph over Mark Carpo, Niño Baylosis, who walked over Jasher Chavez, and JR Baan, who is fresh off a 6-1, 6-1 victory over John Carpo.
The big surge of Cebu’s bets turned out to be contrasting trend to the first day of competitions, where the visiting entries made quite a run.
Manila’s Christopher Canlas, the top-seeded player in the U-16 Boys division, led the way for the visitors with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jeofri Omandam to advance in the division’s second round of competitions, where he was joined by the second-seeded Francis Largo, who defeated Mario Valencia, 6-0, 6-0; Larry Antigua, who defeated Jade Labaya, 6-3, 6-2; and Alex Doller, who drubbed Nico Logayo, 6-0, 6-0.
