Golden Jump

ILOILO CITY – A grader from Mandaue City delivered Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association’s first gold in record-breaking fashion yesterday.

Irin Balauran, a Grade 6 student from the Mandaue City Division, a leapt to a new mark of 10.42 meters to win the gold in Elementary Girls triple jump in the 2005 Palarong Pambansa at the at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Balauran’s mark shattered the previous record of 10.23 set by Southern Mindanao Region Athletic Association’s Almira Bayot during the 1998 Centennial Palaro in Bacolod City.

The gold enabled the Cebuanos to secure the provisional fourth place in the points ranking going into today’s third day of action.

Region 7 also secured four silvers and five bronzes aside from the gold to up its total tally to 1-4-5 and collect 49 points in two days of action.

National Capital Region is lording it over the standings with 11 golds, seven silvers and five bronzes for 90 points, while host region Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Region 6) is at second with 86 points.

Cviraa’s silver medals all came from the gymnasts: Noemi Suco in Elementary Girls artistic gymnastics, the Elementary Girls artistic gymnastics team, the Secondary rhythmic gymnastics team, and Winmar Agdon in Elementary Boys artistic gymnastics.

Swimming gold

The bronze medalists were Vinette Marie Pacana in Secondary Girls rhythmic gymnastics, Clifford Bonjoc, who registered 12.66 meters in Secondary Boys shot put behind Western Visayas gold medalist Rey Dennis Bacay, who established a new meet record with 13.40 meters; Angelika Lado in Secondary Girls shot put with her record of 9.17 meters, Ivan Castańeda in Elementary Boys triple jump with his record of 11.02 meters, Sheena Gacayan in Secondary Girls 800-meter run with a time of two minutes and 26.3 seconds.

The Region 7 tankers also netted four medals yesterday, including a gold in archery but they were not included in the medal and points tally released by the Palaro Secretariat.

Maria Lourdes Coligado took the gold medal in the 50m event in archery and garnered the bronze in the overall event. In swimming, Dumaguete City’s Emelia Zoe Menguito grabbed the silver medal in Secondary Girls 200m butterfly, finishing the competition in two minutes and 35.62 seconds, while the Elementary Girls 4x50m relay team grabbed the bronze medal.

Basketball

Also coughing up a victory yesterday for Region 7 was the Secondary basketball team, which logged it second win after a walkout-marred game against Cavraa.

The boys of coach Rudy Enterina were leading the Cavraa dribblers, 75-54, with just 30 seconds left in the game when the Cavraa players walked out, claiming unfair officiating after one of its players got hit by Cviraa’s Al Dominic Duran.

Also eking out wins for Cviraa was netter Antoinette Jabado, who booted out Jeannete Oliva of Armm, 8-4, in their Elementary Girls singles, while Kristel Mae Buenacosa won by walkover.
