Sugbu gets ready for tough games
By Rommel C. Manlosa

DEFENDING national-champion Tribu Sugbu braces for a tough schedule ahead when it starts its title-retention bid on hostile ground.

The Skygo Motorcycle and SirLitz-backed Tribesmen will debut against last year’s Southern Division runner-up and the current division-leader Ozamis Cotta on May 18 at the Gov. Angel Medina Gym in Ozamis City.

With only two players left from last year’s line-up, Tribu Sugbu coach Al Solis is expected to ferret out the best from his new squad when they face the Cotta, which is determined to keep its winning streak going.

Two straight wins

Ozamis started its season with two straight wins against expansion squads: a 77-74 win over Valencia Golden Harvest last May 1 and a 97-84 romp over the Iligan Crusaders, last May 4.

Tribu Sugbu has never won a game against the Cotta in Ozamis City but defeated the latter in last year’s Southern Division finals after capitalizing on its homecourt edge.

The Cebuanos’ next game is on May 20, when they visit the Cagayan de Oro Stars at the Xavier University Gym in Cagayan de Oro City.

Humiliating

The Stars are also looking to get back at the Tribesmen, who handed them humiliating defeats last season.

CDO split its last two games after a 66-79 loss to Iligan last April 29 and a 65-57 win over the Golden Harvest last May 7.

The Tribesmen will play their first home game against guest squad RP-Cebuana Lhuillier at the Minglanilla Sports Complex on May 27. (RCM)
