A song for SOS
By Sam Costanilla
Spotlight

SONG. I should felicitate songwriter and fellow Sun*Star Cebu columnist Mel Libre for coming up with a composition about the orphaned, neglected and abandoned childreen at the Save Our Souls (SOS Children's Village) in Talamban this city. Have you been to this village already? If you haven't visited the place yet, try to do it one of these days. The Talamban village has continued to rescue and care for innocent children for 25 years now. Anyway, Libre, after visiting the place last May 5, was deeply inspired by the outcome of an interaction he had with the children, as well as the people caring for them. This songwriter-lawyer immediately wrote The Children of the World as his tribute to the orphans. Libre is my co-host in the weekly talk-musical program Sam Enchanted Evening, which is on CCTN channel 47 and SkyCable 56 every Tuesday, 8 to 9 p.m.

GLOBAL. Libre's song, according to SOS Cebu project director Danny Latonio, appeals to everyone, especially those whose mission is to care for orphans. Libre also hopes that as a song, The Children of the World would help the kids, who have been abandoned by their parents and relatives, realize their dreams and bloom as useful citizens when they mature as adults. "This particular song is global in message or content since it is not only for SOS Cebu nor the other parts of the Philippines but for SOS as a worldwide institution," Libre stressed. I understand that he will invite a number of local talents to "contribute" their voices and time for the cause of the SOS Village in Talamban. Libre added, "The Children of the World will have a contemporary touch, as part of it will be in rap." The songwriter is also thinking of asking the young male voices behind the popular Konigs that sang Nganong Mi-Enter to do the rap part. Libre hopes to complete the recording of The Children of the World before this month ends.

FUNDS. I also gathered that SOS Village in Talamban will use The Children of the World as a song to promote its effort to raise funds for the maintenance of its local mission, including the construction of its 12th home, which will be named the Jubilee House. The extra money will also be used to expand the SOS Village's kindergarten school. The public is encouraged to visit the SOS Village website on www.sosphils.org. Its tel. no. is 346-0969.

TOURISM. Suroy Suroy Sugbo is one commendable activity designed to boost local tourism. Whoever thought of this tourism drive should be lauded as it allows us locals to see and appreciate our very own tourist destinations that only foreign visitors care to visit before. It is ironic to think that while some of our moneyed locals fly to other provinces or even foreign lands just to enjoy their tourist attractions, our very own tourist destinations have not been explored by them. Now is the time to reverse the situation, by visiting our own tourist attractions first before we even think of flying to other parts of the country or even abroad as tourists. Cebu has a lot to offer - and Suroy Suroy Sugbo is the right vehicle for us Cebuanos to better appreciate them.

ASSAILED. Most of those who came to watch a recent cultural reenactment were one in assailing the presence of a defeated politico and his insistence that he should be allowed to address the audience on stage. Early politicking? (E-mail: samcost@yahoo.com or call/text 0915-4992844.)
