Gin Kings survive Tigers’ assault
DEFENDING champion Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings got the win they needed but not before getting the scare of their lives.
Despite a big start, the Gin Kings found themselves in great peril in the final period before pulling off a 90-84 win over the slumping Coca-Cola Tigers last night.
San Miguel Beer, on the other hand, climbed up to solo second place with a 95-84 demolition job of the Shell Turbochargers in the main game.
Danny Seigle had 21 points, while Chris Burgess had 20 points and 20 rebounds for San Miguel, which now sports a 9-6 card. Shell fell to its ninth loss in 15 games.
Ginebra, now at 7-8, dominated most of the game, but the hungry Tigers, who have lost seven of their last 10 games, managed to push Ginebra against the wall after forward Rob Wainwright put on a spectacular 3-point shooting spree in the final period.
Wainwright knocked down four triples and lugged the Tigers back into the game with the momentum on their side. Coca-Cola bruiser Ali Peek scored on an inside stab with only 50 seconds left to cut the Gins King’s lead to two at 86-84, but it would turn out to be Coca-Cola’s last gasp of air.
Ginebra tightened its defense to force a turnover in the ensuing play, and Rodney Santos scored four straight points in the last few seconds for the final count. The Tigers are at the bottom of the standings with a 5-10 mark. GCM
