Rama: Soon, some southern action By KARLON N. RAMA STAGE FIVE
THE Firearms and Explosives Division (FED) of the Philippine National Police has officially sanctioned the operation of the Kabkad Gun Club Firing Range in Canasujan, Carcar, Cebu.
Club president Fernando Anino Sr., I was told, recently received a letter from PNP Chief Arturo Lomibao announcing that Camp Crame is now officially recognizing Kabkad and authorizing the operation of its four-bay firing range.
C/Supt. Jaime Caringal, head of the PNP Civil Security Group, endorsed the club’s application for recognition last March 30. It was approved immediately thereafter.
With its permits finally released, Kabkad now has the distinction of being the second government-accredited gun club operating south of Cebu, vice its “sister club,” the Front Sight Gun Club, in Minglanilla town.
Its second sister club, the Talisay-Cebu Aqua City Gun Club, which is based inside the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) firing range in Barangay Maghaway, Talisay City, is still waiting for its papers to clear.
Once its approval comes out, the local shooting community can expect to see even more action down south.
Kabkad, whose roster of members is composed mostly of businessmen, enjoys wide support from the Carcar Municipal Government.
In a recent interview, Carcar Mayor Patrick Barcenas said this is because the municipio sees the existence of a gun club and its firing range as something positive to the local government unit.
He said the organization, for example, will play a vital role in maintaining the peace-and-order situation of the municipality, and that the club has already offered the free use of its shooting range to the town’s PNP force for training purposes.
Front Sight, headed by club president Adrian Tadena, got its PNP accreditation renewed recently and is hosting a practical shooting match for its members and guests in two weeks.
After this, action will shift to Carcar for Kabkad Gun Club’s inaugural shoot.
Kabkad, with match officials provided by Front Sight, held a members-only match a couple of weeks back.
The shoot drew a total of 67 participants, including Talisay City Vice Mayor Aberdovey Belleza and Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Geraldine Faith Econg, and offered Expert and Novice categories in both the Standard and the Production divisions.
Speaking of matches, the Kamagong Gun Club Inc., based inside the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Central Command Headquarters in Camp Lapu-Lapu, Lahug, Cebu City, kicked off the 3rd Annual Kamagong Steel Challenge yesterday.
The match, which drew some 80 participants, was a four-stage affair designed by Kamagong’s Roy de los Santos.
Col. Ceferino Layao, Kamagong president, served as match director for the affair. Results were not yet available at press time.
POSTSCRIPT, GUIMARAS. The efforts of five Cebu shooters prevented what would have been an awards shutout for the province in the recently-concluded First Gentleman’s Cup Practical Shooting Competition in picturesque Guimaras.
Reports from the field say Ramon Vidal, shooting for Kamagong, led the small band of successful smoking guns by topping the Range Officer (RO) category in the Modified division of the pistol match, as hostilities closed Sunday last week.
Together with Jeffrey Alce, who shot for the Casey Gun Club Inc. in Lapu-Lapu and landed sixth in that division, Vidal also managed a 10th-place finish in the regulars with his optic-sighted STI .40 cal. composite.
Shooting grand master Lito Ladroma, together with his other Casey protégées Benson and Jimmy Yu, similarly managed top finishes in their respective divisions.
Based on the official match results published by the Philippine Practical Shooting Association (PPSA), Ladroma was the pistol match’s Standard Division Senior’s category champion. He landed fourth in the division overalls together with Benson, who landed seventh of 117 contenders.
Jimmy, once with the erstwhile Gold Gun Club in Mandaue City before joining Casey Gun Club’s stable of gunslingers, also did good as he landed second in the Revolver Division, next to Philipp Chua.
He made a similar second-place finish in the Standard division of the shotgun match that eventually went to P/Supt. Robert G. Po of the PNP Firearms Explosives Division (FED).
The First Gentleman’s Cup, sanctioned as a Level 3 PPSA match, was a three gun – pistol, rifle and shotgun – event that attracted over 250 shooters from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
It was the first Level 3 event for the year and the second three-gun match held since the Level 2 Sigma Foundation Day competition held at the Tierra del Fuego Firing Range in Tagaytay last Feb. 11 and 12.
Hopefully, it won’t be the last three-gun event to be held because the Cebu Pistol and Rifle Association (CPRA) is reportedly planning to hold one sometime soon.
